The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action are a powerful reminder of the work that still needs to be accomplished to address the harm caused by residential schools and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. These Calls to Action are important and urgent responsibilities that call on all Canadians to listen, learn and take the steps needed to work toward a meaningful reconciliation. True reconciliation comes with acknowledging the past, promoting Indigenous voices and committing to real change. In this case words are not enough, reconciliation requires action from governments, institutions and individuals. It is crucial to center Indigenous knowledge and culture while also actively working to dismantle the systems of colonialism. Justice and healing take time, but each step forward matters. By educating ourselves and others, we can take a stand with Indigenous peoples and create a better future built on respect, equity and truth.
